In 1928, The Young Men's Business League (YMBL) recognized the serious community threat of youth tuberculosis and became dedicated to making a significant contribution to the solution. The original inspiration for the Austin Sunshine Camps was to bolster the immunity of disadvantaged, underfed children fighting tuberculosis. The intent has changed, but our goal remains the same: to strengthen “at-risk” youth against those things that threaten their health—mental and physical. To date, more than 40,000 children have benefited from these efforts.
A single summer camp has grown into an entire series of weeklong, overnight camps during the summer at two locations, a year-round leadership training program, and a scholarship program for Sunshine Campers who graduate from high school.
"Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps will prepare today's high potential, low-income Central Texas students for the challenges of tomorrow, help reduce the high school dropout rate and encourage post secondary education. We accomplish this through the development of academically strong and socially conscious young men and women by fostering life skills and promoting educational success."
